Wickaninnish Inn Wedding: What It’s Really Like to Get Married in Tofino

A Wickaninnish Inn wedding gives you something almost no other Tofino wedding venue can: a genuinely private stretch of beach for your ceremony, oceanfront getting-ready suites, and old-growth coastal rainforest portraits, all within a few minutes of each other. That means very little travel time built into your day, and a lot of flexibility when Tofino’s weather does what Tofino’s weather does. It’s a luxury West Coast experience that still feels wild and unpolished in the best way.

We’re a Tofino wedding photographer and videographer team based in Victoria, BC, and we travelled out to the Wick to document Madeline and Dillon’s June wedding, one of our favourite days we’ve ever shot. Can you have a private beach ceremony at the Wickaninnish Inn?

Yes! And this is the single biggest reason to get married at the Wickaninnish Inn rather than on a public Tofino beach. The Inn has its own private stretch of shoreline, separate from Chesterman Beach, which means your ceremony is genuinely yours. No beachgoers walking through your vows, no dog walkers in the background of your first kiss, no wondering whether a group is going to set up nearby ten minutes before you walk down the aisle.

This matters more than most couples realize until they’re standing in it. Anyone can get married on a public beach in Tofino! You don’t even need a permit for a small ceremony, but you’re sharing that beach with the public, you can’t restrict access, decor is limited, and alcohol isn’t permitted on District land. The tradeoff for “free” is that you have no control over what your ceremony actually looks and feels like. At the Wick, you get the same raw Pacific coastline with none of that uncertainty.

For Madeline and Dillon, that privacy completely changed what we were able to capture. They said their vows with the open Pacific behind them and not another soul in sight beyond their own guests. We sent up the drone to show just how secluded that stretch is. As a photography and videography team, having that kind of uninterrupted space meant we could move freely, get the aerial footage, and stay completely out of their way during the moments that mattered.

It also gave them something we wish more couples asked for. Right after their first kiss, Madeline and Dillon took ten quiet minutes entirely to themselves before anyone approached. Just the two of them saying “you’re my husband” and “you’re my wife” like they couldn’t quite believe it. On a public beach, that moment simply doesn’t exist.

What happens if it rains on your Tofino wedding day?

Your photos will still be beautiful, and if you’re working with a team that plans for it, your day won’t be disrupted either. Rain, mist and dramatic coastal skies produce some of the most striking imagery on Vancouver Island’s West Coast, and the Wickaninnish Inn is specifically built for weather. It’s a venue with a fireplace-lit interior, covered spaces and enormous ocean-facing windows, which means a wet day still looks and feels incredible rather than feeling like a backup plan.

The real answer, though, is in how we build your timeline. As a Tofino wedding photographer and videographer team, we never want your photos to depend on one perfect thirty-minute window of sunshine. Instead of banking everything on a single long portrait session, we build several shorter portrait windows into the day (15 or 20 minutes each) so we can chase whatever conditions the coast gives us. If the sky opens up at 4pm, we go. If it’s flat and grey all afternoon and then clears at 8:30, we go then instead. You stay at your own party, and we watch the light.

Madeline and Dillon got lucky in June! But we planned their day exactly the same way we would have if it had been pouring. Their first look and portraits happened in the coastal rainforest earlier in the day, where the tree canopy gives you soft, filtered light regardless of what the sky is doing. Then a short beach session during cocktail hour. Then golden hour along the shoreline that evening. Three separate opportunities, none of them long enough to pull them away from their guests.

That’s the whole strategy: the forest is your weather-proof location, the beach is your bonus, and the timeline is flexible enough that neither one is a single point of failure.

How far do you have to travel between photo locations at the Wickaninnish Inn?

Almost nowhere, and that’s the practical reason the Wick works so well as a wedding venue. Ocean views, rugged shoreline, private beach and old-growth coastal rainforest are all either on the property or a few minutes from it. You are never building an hour of driving into your wedding day just to get a different backdrop.

Compare that to a lot of destination weddings, where “we want beach photos and forest photos” turns into two separate location moves, two shuttle logistics problems, and forty-five minutes of your day spent in a car in a wedding dress. At the Wickaninnish Inn, you can get ready looking at the ocean, do a first look under towering trees, exchange vows on the sand and step out for golden hour on the shoreline and the longest journey involved is a 4 minute walk.

For Madeline and Dillon, that’s exactly how it played out. Oceanfront getting-ready photos, a first look and portraits among the trees, a private beach ceremony, and golden hour along the water!! Four completely different looks in one gallery and one film, with essentially zero travel time. It meant their timeline stayed relaxed, they were with their guests for most of the day, and we could follow the best light as it moved rather than being locked into a schedule.

How their wedding day unfolded.

As a Tofino wedding photographer and videographer team based in Victoria, BC, travelling across Vancouver Island to document celebrations like this is one of our favourite parts of what we do. There’s nowhere quite like it: the rugged coastline, the moody forests, the golden light rolling in off the Pacific, and Madeline and Dillon’s day used every inch of it.

Getting Ready with a Tofino Ocean View

Both Madeline and Dillon got ready in stunning rooms at the Wickaninnish, each with sweeping views over the beach. Madeline’s room had her whole crew, moms, sisters, best friends, buzzing with excitement, while Dillon got ready surrounded by, fittingly, three different dads: his stepdad, his biological dad, and his soon to be father in law. We love when the guys’ room ends up just as full of heart as the girls’.

Madeline had robes made for her bridal party with each of their names stitched on the back, a sweet detail that made for some really beautiful, personal getting ready photos. And in true “this group is delightfully witchy” fashion, the girls pulled tarot cards that morning, landing, almost unbelievably, on a card about commitment while sitting in room 31. They were getting married. The numbers lined up. Nobody in that room could believe it.

@saltydollshairsalon had Madeline looking absolutely radiant, and once her custom gown and cathedral-length veil were on, it was time for her first look, not with Dillon, but with her people.

A First Look with Her Girls

Madeline surprised her bridesmaids and her mom in her dress, and the reactions were everything you’d hope for: gasps, tears, hands over mouths. We always try to capture this moment in full (the before, the reveal, and the aftermath) because the emotion on friends’ faces says just as much about this day as anything else. And Madeline’s girls did not disappoint!

We grabbed some quiet bridal portraits by the window with that incredible Tofino light pouring in, a few sweet shots of Madeline with her dog before the chaos of the day really kicked in, and a candid, gorgeous image of her bridesmaids gathered around her, helping with her earrings, her flowers, the last details of the dress. Somewhere in there, the girls also snuck in a few TikToks. As you do.

Her bouquet, lush greenery with white florals from @pacific.floral, set the tone for the whole day: classic, romantic, and timeless, without ever feeling fussy.

Into the Tofino Forest for a First Look

From the inn, we moved into the forest surrounding Tofino for Madeline and Dillon’s first look. Madeline wanted her photos to feel earthy and a little whimsical, and the woods around the Wickaninnish delivered exactly that: soft light streaming through the trees, moss underfoot, that quiet, magical hush you only get in a coastal rainforest.

We photographed Madeline alone first, veil lifted and catching the light, before bringing Dillon in. Their first look reaction was instant, big smiles, a long hug, the kind of easy, unfiltered joy that told you everything about how these two operate as a couple. They are, very clearly, best friends.

We let them just exist together for a while after that. We’re big believers in not rushing a couple right after their first look, so instead of jumping straight into a pose list, we gave them some movement based prompts, let them run through the forest a little, laugh, talk, just be. The result was a beautiful mix of editorial style portraits and totally candid, unscripted moments. We also carved out time for solo groom portraits, because as much as we all love photographing The Dress, the groom deserves just as much spotlight, and trust us, brides love having these photos of their person looking handsome and happy just as much as their own.

Their Private Beach Ceremony

Madeline and Dillon said their vows on a completely private stretch of beach at the Wickaninnish, just the two of them, their guests, and the open Pacific behind them. We got drone footage to really show off how stunning and secluded this spot was, waves rolling in, not another soul in sight beyond their own wedding party.

Their ceremony included a beautiful sand ceremony with a twist: a single stone was passed around to every guest, who each held it for a moment and silently sent the couple their well wishes. That same stone was later placed into a jar with sand from the ceremony site, something Madeline and Dillon will keep in their home forever. It was such a thoughtful, personal touch.

Their dog, Bear, served as ring bearer, truly earning his title, and the vows had everyone in tears. After their first kiss, Madeline and Dillon did something we wish more couples knew to ask for: they took ten quiet minutes to themselves before anyone else approached them. No guests, no cameras in their faces, just the two of them, suddenly married, saying “you’re my husband” and “you’re my wife” to each other like they couldn’t quite believe it yet. As their photo and video team, getting to document that private, giddy disbelief is one of the best parts of this job.

Family Photos, Cocktail Hour, and a Sunset Head Start

We always try to knock out family photos quickly after the ceremony. It’s important, but exhausting for a couple who’d rather be celebrating with their guests. We kept things moving and had Madeline and Dillon back at cocktail hour in about twenty minutes flat.

While they mingled with friends, part of our team headed up ahead to the reception space to capture all the detail shots, table settings, florals, the room itself, before a single guest walked in. That meant once everyone arrived, the party could start immediately, no waiting around for photos.

We also snuck Madeline and Dillon down to the beach for a short couple’s portrait session, fifteen or twenty minutes, max. Tofino weather can be unpredictable, so rather than banking on one long golden hour session later, we like to grab a few shorter windows throughout the day to make sure we never miss the light.

A Grand Entrance and Heartfelt Speeches

Madeline and Dillon’s reception entrance was pure energy, cheering, hands in the air, a full lap around the room before settling in for a quick thank you to their guests. The speeches that followed, from parents and one particularly memorable friend, were funny, emotional, and so clearly from the heart. Speeches are some of our favourite moments to photograph, couples tend to be at their most natural, laughing one second and wiping away tears the next.

Dinner at the Wickaninnish lived up to its reputation, genuinely some of the best food in Tofino, followed by cake cutting and a golden hour photo and video session that might be some of the most beautiful images we’ve ever captured on this coast. Madeline and Dillon ran down the beach together, laughing, the sun dropping low behind them, waves crashing in the background, even grabbing a few minutes with Bear along the shoreline. We kept direction loose and let them move naturally, no stiff posing, just two people who’d just gotten married, having the time of their lives.

Dancing the Night Away at the Hemlock Hideaway

As the sun set, the party moved to the Wickaninnish’s newer event space, the Hemlock Hideaway, a tented dance floor tucked into the trees just steps from the main venue. Madeline and Dillon kicked things off with a fully choreographed first dance, complete with a lift in the middle and a dramatic dip at the end, that had their guests cheering, followed by a combined parent dance to keep things light and fun for everyone involved.

The night closed out with a full group dance floor photo, surrounded by friends and family who were clearly having the time of their lives. We always make a point of capturing the dancing in full swing, it’s some of the footage that brings a wedding film to life, and it perfectly captured the spirit of Madeline and Dillon’s day: loud, joyful, and full of people who genuinely adore them.

Final Thoughts

Some weddings are quiet and intimate. Some are big, loud, and full of energy. Madeline and Dillon’s was the latter, and it was an absolute privilege to spend the day documenting it. These two were unapologetically themselves from sunrise to sunset, hands in the air, big laughs, completely smitten with each other and surrounded by some of the kindest people we’ve had the pleasure of photographing.
