As a Victoria BC wedding photographer and videographer, I shoot at Hatley Castle every single year. I get asked some version of this question constantly: is Hatley Castle actually good for a bigger wedding, or is it really only meant for small, intimate ceremonies? We’ve photographed and filmed weddings here ranging from 30 guests to over 200. This venue handles scale beautifully, and next year I have two of my largest Hatley Castle weddings yet.
How many guests can Hatley Castle actually hold?
Capacity depends on which spaces you use, since Hatley Castle’s wedding package includes several distinct areas:
- Castle Drawing Room: seats up to 100 guests for a formal dinner reception
- First floor of the Castle: holds up to 200 guests for a stand-up reception
- Castle Terrace (tented): accommodates up to 250-300 guests
- Croquet Garden or Italian Garden: used for outdoor ceremonies, with garden-only ceremony bookings holding up to 280 guests
Because your ceremony typically takes place on the expansive lawn facing the castle, guest count barely affects that part of the day. There’s simply a lot of room. Where it matters more is your reception layout. The larger weddings often can’t fit everyone into a single room and may need to split guests between indoor and outdoor spaces. You may have to lean on the tented Terrace for the full group.
Is there a “best” guest count for a wedding at Hatley Castle?
Honestly, no. I’ve shot 30 to 40 guest weddings here that felt wonderfully spacious, with plenty of room to explore the gardens and castle grounds. I’ve also shot 200 to 250 guest weddings that felt just as comfortable, since there’s rarely another venue on Vancouver Island that can hold that many people without feeling stuffy or cramped. Hatley Castle’s real advantage is its outdoor space. Guests aren’t stuck in one room all evening, they can wander the Italian Garden, explore the grounds, and spread out naturally, which is genuinely hard to find at this scale in Victoria BC.
What changes logistically for a bigger wedding at Hatley Castle?
The ceremony itself doesn’t really change, the lawn accommodates large groups easily. The reception is where planning matters more. At higher guest counts, you likely won’t fit everyone into one room, so some couples split guests between the Drawing Room, first floor, and Terrace, or lean fully into the tented Terrace setup for larger groups.
My biggest piece of advice for any couple getting married at Hatley Castle, regardless of guest count: plan for a first look, and get as many photos done before your ceremony as possible. Hatley Castle ceremonies typically can’t begin until later in the day. If you wait until after the ceremony to do couple portraits, family photos, and guest photos, dinner tends to get pushed quite late, especially with a bigger guest list where photos naturally take longer.
What does a wedding at Hatley Castle cost?
As of 2026, Hatley Castle’s classic wedding package (which includes exclusive use of the first floor, Terrace, Terrace Lawn, Croquet Garden, and Italian Garden from 4pm to midnight) runs $14,500 for peak season (May to October) and $12,350 for shoulder season (November to April). Catering is handled exclusively through the venue’s in-house provider, Truffles Catering, with menu costs additional. Couples wanting a separate ceremony-only garden booking, or the combination package that pairs the Castle with the Quarterdeck Ballroom for the reception, have additional pricing options to consider directly with the venue.
Is Hatley Castle good for wedding photography and videography with a large guest list?
Yes, and it’s one of the reasons I keep coming back every year. Between the castle itself, the Italian Garden, the ocean and mountain views over the Juan de Fuca Strait, and the sheer number of beautiful backdrops across the property, there’s no shortage of locations to work with, even with a big bridal party or guest list.
One thing worth knowing: drones aren’t permitted at Hatley Castle, since it sits on Royal Roads University property with its own airspace restrictions. It doesn’t hold us back much though. There are a few staircases on the property we climb to capture sweeping, elevated shots of the ceremony and the full castle grounds, which gives a similar feel to drone footage without needing one.
For couples with larger weddings, I always recommend booking both photography and videography together. We typically bring a full team of four for bigger days like this, which means more coverage, more angles, and nothing missed, even when there’s a lot happening across a big property with a big guest list.
Are Hatley Castle weddings worth traveling for?
Hatley Castle is one of the only true castle venues in Canada, which is exactly why couples travel from across the country, and internationally, to get married here. It’s also an incredibly popular destination for engagement sessions alone, with couples flying in from the US just to take photos on the grounds. Between the ocean views, the castle architecture, and the Italian Garden, it’s the kind of venue that genuinely takes people’s breath away the moment they arrive, guests included. I’ve even been hired to photograph corporate events here, where companies fly employees in from around the world simply to celebrate at this venue.
