Saxe Point Park in Esquimalt is one of the best surprise proposal locations in Victoria BC because it offers privacy, a dramatic rocky shoreline, and unobstructed ocean views without needing a big production. As a Victoria BC and Vancouver Island proposal and wedding photographer, I’ve found that couples who choose meaningful, low-key locations like this one tend to have the most genuine, unposed reactions, which is exactly what happened when Colleen surprised Rachel here.
Why did Colleen choose Saxe Point Park specifically for her proposal?
Colleen chose Saxe Point Park because she wanted the moment to feel personal and centred around something the couple already loved: the ocean. She reached out to me as her Victoria BC proposal photographer already knowing what mattered most, and picking a location tied to a shared passion is one of the first tips I give couples in my free Perfect Proposal Guide.
When Colleen and Rachel first connected on a dating app three years ago, there was an immediate sense that something was different. What started as a simple conversation quickly turned into a deep and lasting connection. Even through seasons of long distance, their relationship only became stronger, proving that the right person always feels like home no matter the distance.
When Colleen reached out to me to be her Victoria BC proposal photographer for her surprise proposal, she already knew exactly what mattered most. She wanted it to feel personal, meaningful, and centred around one of their favourite things: the ocean. (Picking a meaningful location is one of the tips I share in my free Perfect Proposal Guide!)
For a perfect oceanside proposal in Victoria BC, Saxe Point Park is one of my absolute favourite locations.

Tucked away in Esquimalt just outside downtown Victoria, Saxe Point Park feels private, romantic, and naturally beautiful without needing anything extra.
The rocky shoreline creates the perfect intimate proposal setting, while the open ocean views, sailboats drifting in the distance, and hazy mountain backdrops make every moment feel like a movie set. At golden hour, the entire park glows in soft, warm light, creating the kind of atmosphere that feels too beautiful to be real.
For couples planning a destination proposal on Vancouver Island, it is one of those places that instantly feels memorable. It gives you privacy without sacrificing breathtaking views, which is exactly what most couples are searching for. (Planning a destination proposal on Vancouver Island? Colleen chose the rocks by the ocean for their proposal spot, timed perfectly for 7 PM when the golden light would be at its best.
She thought through every detail. She wanted Rachel to feel surprised, relaxed, and completely present in the moment. She even planned a surprise celebratory dinner afterward, creating the kind of full experience that turns a proposal into a memory you never stop talking about.
This is exactly why I always tell couples that the proposal is not just about the ring. It is about the entire experience.

As they walked along the shoreline together, everything looked beautifully effortless.
Colleen wore a white linen top with dark shorts, and Rachel wore the most perfect soft blue sundress that moved beautifully in the ocean breeze. When they reached the rocks overlooking the water, Colleen got down on one knee with the ocean stretching endlessly behind them.
The sailboat floating quietly in the background. The mountains softened by summer haze. The golden evening light wrapping around them.
It was one of those moments where time feels like it slows down.
The kind of moment you know will become part of your story forever. And of course, Rachel said yes.

One of my favourite parts of proposal sessions is what happens immediately after. The nerves disappear. The excitement takes over. Everything suddenly feels lighter and fun!
That post proposal joy is impossible to fake, and it creates some of the most genuine photographs.
We wandered through the dry summer grass glowing gold in the evening sun, stopped under the trees where the light poured through the branches, and let them simply enjoy being together. There was laughing. Running down the path by the ocean. Exploring the rocks. Quiet moments wrapped up in each other overlooking the water.
And of course, plenty of goofy, joy filled moments that felt the most like them. (Those are always my favourite!)
Because the best photos are never about perfect posing. They are about connection.

One of the most meaningful parts of this story is that it did not end here. After their proposal, Colleen and Rachel asked me to photograph their 2027 wedding, and honestly, that is one of the greatest honours as a photographer. There is something incredibly special about documenting more than one chapter of someone’s story.
From the nerves of planning a surprise proposal to the excitement of wedding planning, there is a comfort that comes from working with someone who already knows your story. Someone who understands your relationship. Someone you trust to capture not just how everything looked, but how it felt.
That consistency creates something so much deeper than beautiful photos. It creates peace.
You do not have to explain yourselves again. You simply get to show up fully present, knowing the moments that matter most are already being cared for.
That is always the goal. Not just beautiful images. A relationship that lasts beyond one single milestone.
