Three months of secret planning. Two hidden cameras. One perfect, private evening. This is what a surprise proposal in Victoria BC looks like when every single detail is done right.
When Harwinder first reached out to me, he knew he wanted to propose, but had no idea where or how. Over the next three months and two planning calls, we figured it all out together. The result was one of the most beautiful, emotional, and genuinely joyful proposals I’ve captured. It took place at Saxe Point Park in Victoria, BC.
Planning a surprise proposal on Vancouver Island? This real proposal at Saxe Point Park shows exactly how to choose the perfect location, keep the moment a surprise, and capture it beautifully with a professional proposal photographer and videographer on Vancouver Island.
Watch how this Saxe Point Park surprise proposal unfolded:
Harwinder contacted me about three months before the proposal. He knew he wanted something private and meaningful. Somewhere with the ocean, somewhere quiet enough that the moment would feel intimate. He just wasn’t sure where.
Together, we narrowed it down to Saxe Point Park in Esquimalt. It has everything you want for a proposal: rugged shoreline, open ocean views, golden hour light, and enough seclusion that a person hiding in the bushes with a camera doesn’t look suspicious. (More on that in a moment.)
Harwinder and Imran have been together for over seven years. They’ve done long distance and have both been pursuing advanced degrees, a master’s and a PhD between them. They’ve built a relationship that’s grounded, real, and full of love. For Imran, this wasn’t going to come as a shock. Harwinder wanted to make the moment his own. He wanted something that would still surprise her, that would still feel special, something just for the two of them.
That’s exactly what happened.

My team and I arrived at Saxe Point Park 30 minutes before Harwinder and Imran. We scouted the exact spot, confirmed the light, and set up a stationary camera that would film the entire proposal from one angle. Then my videographer and I tucked ourselves into the bushes with a second camera and two photo cameras. We had one zoom lens and one wide angle so we could capture the moment from multiple angles the second it happened.
Imran knew a photo and video session was happening (Harwinder introduced us as creating content), so she would expect cameras. What she didn’t know was what was actually about to happen.

When Harwinder was ready, he gave us the wave. We stepped out from our hiding spot and moved in closer just as he got down on one knee. The reaction was everything. Pure surprise, pure joy. The kind of moment that makes this work as a Victoria BC proposal photographer and videographer feel like a privilege.
After the proposal, we gave them five to ten minutes alone to decompress and really soak everything in. We set a microphone nearby so we could capture their conversation. What we got was incredible! You can hear them talking about how long he planned it, whether she had any idea, what it all meant. That audio is woven into the proposal film, and it makes the whole thing feel completely unique to who they are.
One moment that stood out: Harwinder told Imran that he knows she’s going to be a wonderful wife, and that she’ll also be an incredible mother. It was quiet, genuine, and completely unscripted. That’s the kind of thing you can only capture when you give people real space to breathe.

After the proposal, we moved into a 40-minute couples session right there at Saxe Point Park, complete with champagne. Neither of them had done a professional photo session before. Harwinder mentioned they both get a little awkward in front of a camera (this is a common concern when people contact me!) But you’d never know it from the images. They were laughing the whole time. We ended the session as the sun set over the ocean at around 7:45pm, with that warm golden light that Victoria does so well.

The proposal was only the beginning of the evening. Harwinder had arranged for friends to fly in from Seattle to surprise Imran at dinner. She had no idea they were coming. The whole group met at Boom + Batten on the Inner Harbour at 8:30pm, with flowers, cake, and everyone she loves in one room. Spending the weekend together in Victoria, exploring downtown, brunch, beaches, it was the full celebration this couple deserved.

As part of the proposal package he chose, Harwinder received sneak peek photos within four hours of the shoot so he could share them immediately with family and friends that same night. From there, he received a proofing gallery where he and Imran chose their favourite 40 images, all fully edited and delivered within the week. He also received a three-minute proposal film and a short-form version cut for social media, both designed to be played at the August engagement party.
Because it was earlier in my season as a Vancouver Island Elopement and Wedding Photography and Videography team, I was able to turn the full package around in one week instead of the standard three.

Yes, it’s one of my favourite Victoria BC Surprise Proposal locations! It’s tucked away in Esquimalt, which means it doesn’t get the tourist foot traffic of somewhere like Fisherman’s Wharf or the Inner Harbour. You get rocky shoreline, driftwood, ocean views, and genuinely beautiful light in the hour before sunset. It’s private enough to feel intimate, but open enough that the photos have real depth and scenery.
Other spots I love for proposals in Victoria include Macaulay Point Park, Glencoe Park, Willows Beach in Oak Bay, and the Oak Bay Beach Hotel for a more elevated setting. Every location has its own feel, and finding the right one for your partner’s personality is something I help with from the very first planning call.

Everything you need to know before booking a proposal photographer or videographer on Vancouver Island.
Proposal photography packages in Victoria BC typically range from $700 to $2,500 depending on the length of coverage, whether video is included, and the number of edited images. At Hayley Zumkeller Photography & Videography, packages start at $700 and include everything from pre-proposal planning support to sneak peek photos delivered within four hours of the shoot.
Ideally, book your proposal photographer at least four to eight weeks in advance, especially during Victoria’s peak season (May through September) when dates fill up quickly. That said, the earlier you reach out, the more planning support you’ll receive. Harwinder contacted us three months before the proposal, which gave us time for two planning calls, location scouting, and coordinating every detail. If you’re proposing soon, it’s still worth reaching out. We’ll do our best to accommodate last-minute bookings.
Victoria has no shortage of stunning proposal locations. Some of our favourites include Saxe Point Park in Esquimalt (private, oceanfront, beautiful at golden hour), Macaulay Point Park, Glencoe Park (great for driftwood and beach vibes), Willows Beach in Oak Bay, Dallas Road Beach, the Oak Bay Beach Hotel for a more elevated, indoor-outdoor option, and many many more. The best location depends on your partner’s personality. Do they love the ocean? Prefer something lush and green? Want the city skyline in the background? We help every client find the perfect spot during the planning process. And I have a few more hidden gems to share with you!
This is something we plan carefully together. We arrive 30 minutes before you and your partner, scout the exact spot, and position ourselves out of sight, whether that’s behind trees, rocks, or yes, sometimes in a bush. We use a zoom lens to capture the moment from a distance, plus a stationary camera set up to film the full scene. Your partner doesn’t see us until the moment has happened, and we choose to step in for the engagement portion of the shoot. A believable cover story helps too. Many clients tell their partners they’re doing a photo session for an upcoming event, which is exactly what Harwinder did, or that they’re going for a nice dinner!
You don’t need both, but even something as simple as an iPhone video of the moment will be incredibly meaningful to your partner. Having both is something most clients are incredibly grateful for afterward. Photos give you individual frames you can print, share, and hang on your wall. Video gives you the full scene: the walk-up, the moment he got down on one knee, her reaction, the tears, the laughter, the conversations you had right after. Many of our clients say the video is what makes them cry every time they watch it especially when it includes real audio from the moments after the proposal. If you’re on the fence, our packages offer flexible add-on options so you can make the call based on your budget. Most of our packages already include iPhone video!
That’s entirely up to you. Some clients prefer a completely covert setup where their partner has no idea anyone is there until after the proposal. Others find it easier to use a cover story (telling their partner they booked a photo session for a different reason) so that being in front of a camera feels natural. Both approaches work beautifully, and we’ll help you decide which makes more sense based on your partner’s personality and how comfortable they are with cameras.
Victoria weather can be unpredictable, especially in spring and fall. We always recommend having a backup date or location in mind just in case. We’re happy to reschedule if the weather truly doesn’t cooperate. We’d rather you have the proposal and the photos you deserve than rush through a downpour. That said, some of the most beautiful and intimate proposal photos we’ve taken have been in soft overcast light, so a cloudy day isn’t always a reason to reschedule. We’ll make the call together based on what’s actually happening outside.
You’ll receive sneak peek images within four hours of the shoot, so you can start sharing the news with family and friends the same evening. From there, you’ll receive a proofing gallery within one week where you choose your favourite images, ensuring you love every single photo in your final gallery. Fully edited photos are delivered within three weeks, and your proposal film shortly after. For clients earlier in the season, we’re often able to turn everything around even faster.
Both! Proposal planning support is built into every package. Before your shoot, we hop on a planning call to talk through your partner’s personality, the location, the timing, and how you want the moment to unfold. We send you a free “how to propose” guide packed with tips, help you choose an outfit, and make sure you feel completely confident going into the day. Most clients tell us that having a photographer who also helps with the planning takes an enormous amount of stress off their plate, and that’s exactly the point.
Yes! We’re based in Victoria and regularly shoot across Vancouver Island, including Campbell River, Nanaimo, Tofino, and the Comox Valley. We’re also available for destination proposals anywhere in the world. Travel fees may apply depending on location. Reach out and we’ll put together a custom quote for you.
