Hidden on the edge of the ocean in Victoria, BC, this historic venue set the stage for one of the most elegant and emotional weddings I’ve ever photographed and filmed. As a Victoria BC Wedding Photographer, I can’t believe we get to call this venue ‘local’ – espeically knowing that people travel from all over Canada and America to get married at this castle.

This particular wedding was everything a Hatley Castle wedding should be—intimate, luxurious, and filled with genuine connection.

Getting Ready Inside the Castle: Victoria BC Wedding Photographer

The day began inside the castle itself, where the couple got ready just floors apart, surrounded by their closest friends and family. Looking out from the windows, they could see the ceremony site being set up below—watching their loved ones arrive, laughter already echoing across the lawns. It felt surreal, like watching your love story unfold in real time from a fairytale tower.

The bride’s suite was glowing with natural light and calm energy. We captured emotional moments between her and her family, as well as beautiful bridal portraits that felt both regal and relaxed. Thanks to having a second photographer on my team, we could also document the groom’s excitement and the joy of guests arriving outside.

A Private First Look & Champagne Toast in the Halls of History

Before the ceremony, the couple shared a private first look in the castle’s grand interior. The soft light, historic architecture, and the pop of champagne made it feel like a celebration all on its own. We took group photos indoors with their closest people—laughing, toasting, and soaking in the moment before everything officially began.

The ceremony took place outdoors on the castle lawn, with fewer than 30 guests creating a warm, intimate atmosphere. Everyone was smiling, laughing, and crying—sometimes all at once. With my second shooter capturing angles from above, we were able to document the ceremony from multiple perspectives, including the stunning overhead view of the couple framed by Hatley Castle’s iconic gardens.

You could feel the love radiating from every guest. This wasn’t just a wedding—it was a gathering of soulmates, both romantic and platonic.

After the “I do’s,” we made our way to the Italian gardens for a champagne toast with the whole family. This little pocket of Europe right here in Victoria BC is absolutely breathtaking. With manicured hedges, stone walkways, and blooming florals, it felt like we had stepped into Tuscany for the afternoon.

As a Victoria BC wedding photographer, I work closely with the venue to ensure all permits and timing are in place. Typically when you book a Wedding Package with the Castle, it includes these photo permits. The only downside is that the castle has a strict timeline because it is technically a public venue. If you only have your wedding booked there until 5pm, then you have to leave right at 5pm, unless you don’t mind the crowds of people that will come through.

Q4: What time of year is best for a Hatley Castle wedding?
A: Spring through early fall is ideal, especially if you want to take advantage of the lush gardens and golden hour portraits. However, the castle is beautiful year-round—even for winter weddings.
